Sailing yachts racing at the St Barths Bucket Regatta

The first yachts of the St Barths Bucket Regatta are beginning to appear in the bay of Gustavia, quietly signalling the start of one of the most distinctive gatherings in the sailing world.

Each March, the small Caribbean harbour of St Barths becomes the meeting point for an extraordinary fleet of large sailing yachts. Around thirty to forty yachts — many measuring between 30 and more than 70 metres — are expected to take part in this year’s St Barths Bucket Regatta, bringing together classic schooners, elegant cruising yachts and high-performance modern sloops.

The first arrivals are already visible around the harbour. The Swan 111 GEIST is currently moored in Gustavia, while yachts including Freya and Q have been spotted anchored just outside the port as crews begin preparing their yachts for the racing ahead.

Over the coming days, the fleet will continue to grow as yachts arrive from across the Caribbean ahead of the start of the St Barths Bucket Regatta.

The St Barths Bucket Regatta Born From a Simple Idea

The origins of the St Barths Bucket Regatta lie far from the Caribbean.

In 1986, a group of yacht owners organised an informal race off Nantucket in the United States. The rules were simple: handicaps were agreed the evening before the start — often over drinks — and the fastest yacht deliberately started last, chasing the fleet from behind.

That relaxed philosophy still defines the regatta today. While the yachts themselves represent some of the most sophisticated sailing machines ever built, the spirit of the St Barths Bucket Regatta remains rooted in friendly competition and the pleasure of sailing exceptional yachts.

Racing Around St Barths

Racing during the St Barths Bucket Regatta typically takes place on courses of up to 28 nautical miles around the island of St Barths.

Each morning, race organisers analyse wind forecasts, sea state and yacht performance data before selecting the most suitable course. Multiple variations are possible, including routes around neighbouring islets or around the island itself in either direction.

To ensure that these enormous yachts do not sail too close together, the regatta uses a pursuit-style start system — sometimes referred to as a “kangaroo start”. Slower yachts leave first, while the fastest yachts start last and attempt to catch the fleet during the race.

The Spectacular Fleet of the St Barths Bucket Regatta 2026

The St Barths Bucket Regatta brings together one of the most extraordinary fleets of large sailing yachts in the world. From majestic classic schooners to cutting-edge performance superyachts, these remarkable vessels represent the very pinnacle of naval architecture and sailing craftsmanship.

Each March, the harbour of Gustavia becomes a unique stage where some of the most beautiful sailing yachts ever built gather before setting their immense sails around the island of St Barths.

Originally launched in 2004 as Mirabella V, the spectacular M5 remains one of the largest single-masted sailing yachts ever built. Designed by Ron Holland and constructed by VT Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom, the yacht measures an impressive 78 metres in length.

Her most striking feature is the extraordinary 90-metre carbon mast, the tallest freestanding mast ever installed on a monohull sailing yacht. Supporting more than 3,000 square metres of sail area, the rig gives M5 an unmistakable silhouette when she appears on the horizon.

Although built primarily for long-distance cruising, M5 remains a genuine sailing yacht, with an immense sail plan that allows her to move gracefully under sail despite her size. When she joins the fleet during the St Barths Bucket Regatta, her towering rig dominates the skyline of Gustavia and instantly becomes one of the most photographed yachts in the harbour.

Rigged as a three-masted gaff schooner, Atlantic carries an immense sail plan of roughly 1,700 m², making her the largest classic schooner replica ever built. Her towering rig and sweeping overhangs make her one of the most spectacular yachts sailing today. Atlantic is one of the most iconic schooners sailing today for charter.
